This workshop provided an overall theoretical perspective to integrate Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) with cultural humility to work with African American couples. This included key concepts of EFT: Attachment Theory, Interventions, Tango Moves, as well as Steps and Stages; in addition to key concepts essential for treating African American couples: racial identity, stress and stress-based racial events, cultural humility, priming for negative appraisals, and priming for harsh behavioral tendencies within and between partners.

These concepts were demonstrated with a number of video tapes and there will be opportunities to discuss & practice. The workshop provided examples of how to bring up race systematically in the early phase of therapy, and how to integrate race matters into each phases of the clinical process.

Prior training in Emotionally Focused Therapy is helpful but not required.

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be better able to:

  1. Identify 3 basic concepts of EFT
  2. Describe 3 race matters associated with African American couples
  3. Describe 2 ways that cultural humility and EFT interplay
  4. Demonstrate 2 practices to integrate cultural humility and EFT
