Do escalated couples make you want to quit being a therapist? We explored those moments of greatest difficulty for couples, from still-face to high reactivity to despair and rage. Participants learned how to keep focus and go deeper in the face of reactivity. This training explored, demonstrated, practiced and integrated in an interactive, experiential way. Through a combination of lecture, videotaped session samples, and exercises, participants learned to better conceptualize EFT and to help couples recognize and deescalate problematic cycles of interaction. Participants also learned to help couples create or restore the emotional bond between them once the negative cycle—and the attachment needs that drive it—has been understood.

At the conclusion of this program, participants were better able to:

  1. Describe 3 underlying emotions that withdrawers feel
  2. Describe 3 underlying emotions that pursuers feel
  3. Define 3 EFT clinical skills associated with de-escalation
  4. Describe 1 function of protective strategies that create negative cycles
  5. Identify 2 aspects of the positive cycle of responsiveness to replace the escalated, negative cycle
